What is the minimum wage?

The national minimum wage is the minimum hourly rate a worker must be paid. The amount a worker is entitled to depends on their age and if they are an apprentice.

There are two types of minimum wage, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and the National Living Wage (NLW). These rates change every year, usually effective from 1st April.

What are the current rates?

From 1 April 2021 the National Living Wage age threshold reduced from 25 to 23.

The current minimum wage rates are as follows:

*Apprentices under 19 year of age or in their first year of apprenticeship
